Hill College hosted its 2021 commencement ceremony Thursday, May 13, at the HILCO Civic and Events Center. Because the college had to cancel its 2020 ceremony due to the pandemic, both the 2020 and 2021 classes were honored during this year’s program.

“Our 2021 commencement ceremony was a special moment to celebrate the 2020 and 2021 graduates personally,” said Hill College Vice President of Student Services, Lizza Trenkle. “It provided us the opportunity to recognize our graduates for their successes as well as thank our faculty for their commitment to instruction during the pandemic.”

More than 200 graduates were honored during the ceremony for earning an associate’s degree, certificate of completion, and/or occupational skills award. The second graduating class of Burleson Collegiate High School, a program where students receive their high school diploma and an associate’s degree from Hill College simultaneously, were also recognized, as were the graduates of Hill College Fire Academy Class 42 and 43 and the Associate Degree Nursing Class of 2021.

Although he believes the college did a great job celebrating the 2020 graduates virtually last year, Hill College Vice President of Instruction Dr. Kerry Schindler said the college was eager to hold an in-person ceremony.

“Every commencement ceremony is special for all those involved, especially the students,” Schindler said. “The virtual ceremonies held last year at many colleges and universities across the country missed out on the special feeling that one gets when walking across the stage and hearing the applause for their efforts and accomplishment. There are few times in our lives that the whole audience is focused on us as individuals. Graduation is one of those times, and it’s special. We were happy to celebrate the students and their families.”
